6 Reasons Travel is Good for Your Health
by Ashton Rigg on 07-Mar-2016 06:00:00
More than just giving us a great new display picture and the envy of our work colleagues, travel is actually good for us on a much deeper level. Travel is one of the greatest joys in life – even a holiday that doesn’t quite go to plan is better than no holiday at all!
We already know travel makes you a better person, but could it really be good for your health? We say yes – six times yes!
1. Travel reduces your stress levels
It could be because you’re away from work, it could be because you don’t have anything on your to-do list except lounge by the pool, but travelling is scientifically proven to lower your stress levels and increase endorphins (science speak for chemical good vibes).
That blissful post-holiday feeling isn’t just in your mind – you really are happier and more relaxed! In fact, this feeling has been known to linger anywhere from a few days to a few weeks after you return from your vay-cay.
2. Travel keeps your mind nimble
Remembering the route back to your accomm, juggling foreign phrases, counting out different currency... travel gives your brain a workout without you even realising!
When you’re somewhere new, your mind becomes uber stimulated. You’re looking at new things, hearing different languages, eating different food... it’s a sensory explosion! These new experiences increase your brain’s flexibility and keep it sharp.
3. Travel keeps you fit
Have you ever used a steps counter on holiday? You can rack up your 10,000 steps without even trying! While most of us tend to bypass our hotel gyms, we all get plenty of incidental exercise simply by wandering.
Active travellers are also more inclined to try something new and exciting on holiday, pumping up the adrenaline by bungy jumping, stand up paddle boarding, or even a scenic cycle.
4. Travel strengthens your immune system
Getting ‘Bali belly’ is basically a rite of passage. While it may be a drag when you’re abroad, picking up a little bug here or there is actually beneficial to your immune system.
The bacteria you’re exposed to in different environments may make you sniffly and miserable today, but it could protect you from more serious ailments in the long run. Still, carrying instant hand sanitiser and bottled water is a major healthy travel tip!
5. Travel offers natural healing
From volcanic mud pools in New Zealand to Scandinavian saunas, the world is filled with places that promise natural healing.
Whether it’s bubbling away in a hot spring or absorbing the energy of a sacred temple, you’re bound to feel a little lighter and brighter after these unique travel experiences. Even a dip in the ocean or some time out in the sun is good for what ails you!
6. Travel is an antidepressant
If we didn’t already make it clear, travelling is pretty much a cure-all for when you're feeling down. You know when you’ve been cooped up in the house or office all day and finally step outside for some fresh air and sunshine? That’s what travel feel like!
When you travel, you socialise more, smile more and sleep better. Time to book that next trip then, eh?
